Kolkata
“You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have the eyes to see”- Sister Teresa
Before we set sail for Kolkata we stopped at a small village where they made Sarai the traditional method still festive season we were swarmed by children as we walked to the village all happy to see us laughing and waiting toshake your hand and say hello. The weaving brought back memories of Laos but here it was done by men and women. A mixture of cotton, silk and Rayo could be used some of the colours were outstanding.
Finally on the outskirts Kolkara we sailed past the old Portuguese settlement of Bandai and Dutch settlement of Chinsuri stopping at the French settlement of Chandemagore which was in possession by the French until 1950. We walked along the promenade seeing the French influence the city was getting ready for a festival so the vendors from outlying villages come in town to sell their fair type products and food.
As we walked back to the country boat we were lucky enough to witness a one month baby girl have her first bath in the Ganges. So lovely the mother with other family members looking on they bathed her so gently the baby was not impressed at all.
As this was the last night on this boat the crew were introduced and we danced and laughed together the second chef made a fabulous cake mapping our journey. Lighting candles in the Ganges to wish us well.
Can’t believe this is the last day on the boat I’ve had a great time. The crew look after so well. It’s and early start tomorrow morning to cross town to get to the airport for a 10 am departure
